Industrial Synthetic Lubricants
Industrial synthetic oils are engineered lubricants designed to deliver reliable performance under conditions where conventional mineral oils may struggle, such as extreme temperatures, heavy loads, high speeds, extended operating periods, or chemically aggressive environments.
Main Types
-
PAO (Polyalphaolefin): Widely used in industrial gear oils, compressor oils, hydraulic fluids and bearing lubricants.
-
PAG (Polyalkylene Glycol): Offers excellent friction reduction and deposit control; commonly used in compressors, worm gears and selected high-temperature applications.
-
Synthetic Esters: Provide excellent lubricity, thermal stability and biodegradability; used in compressors, aviation, high-temperature chains and environmentally sensitive applications.
-
Phosphate Esters: Primarily used as fire-resistant hydraulic fluids in power generation, steel manufacturing and other high-risk industries.
-
Silicone Oils: Suitable for applications requiring wide temperature capability, chemical stability and compatibility with certain plastics and elastomers.
-
PFPE Oils: Highly resistant to heat, chemicals, oxygen and radiation; typically used in vacuum systems, semiconductor manufacturing and other demanding specialist applications.
Key Advantages
-
Longer lubricant and equipment service life
-
Superior performance at high and low temperatures
-
Improved resistance to oxidation and thermal breakdown
-
Reduced sludge, varnish and deposit formation
-
Better wear protection and equipment reliability
-
Longer oil-change intervals and reduced maintenance
-
Improved energy efficiency through lower friction
-
Reduced downtime and overall operating costs
Although synthetic oils generally have a higher initial cost, their longer service life, improved equipment protection and reduced maintenance requirements can provide a lower total cost of ownership. The correct synthetic lubricant must always be selected according to the equipment design, operating conditions, OEM requirements and compatibility with seals and existing lubricants.
